Files
The Files tab of an open project shows what the project has downloaded. This page covers looking through it, the viewer, and what you can do with a file.
Only downloaded files are listed here. Files still on their way are in the strip along the bottom of the project - see Watch a run.
Views
The buttons at the left of the toolbar switch between List, Tiles and Gallery. Tiles is where you start; Gallery shows bigger pictures; List puts each file on a row with its kind, name, size and, where they are known, its resolution and length. The view you choose is kept, and it is the same in every project.
On tiles, pictures and videos show a thumbnail, and a video carries a small badge with its length. Until a thumbnail is ready, the tile shows the kind of file instead.
A dot marks a file you have not looked at yet - in List, its name in bold does - and a star marks a favourite. The star appears when you point at a file; click it to add the file to your favourites or take it out.
Sort, filter and search
- The sort button orders the files by Arrival, Name, Size, Added, State, Date published, Resolution or Length, Ascending or Descending. Files that have nothing for the chosen field go to the end.
- Kind narrows the list to Pictures, Video, Audio, Documents, Archives or Other; Any kind shows everything.
- Unseen shows the files you have not opened in the viewer yet, and Favourites the ones you starred. Mark everything as seen clears every dot at once.
- Search by name finds the files whose names, or the names of the folders they are in, contain every word you type. / takes you there, and Esc clears it.
The number of matching files is in the middle of the toolbar. In a narrow panel, Kind, Unseen, Favourites and Mark everything as seen move into the More menu.
The list does not rearrange itself while you look at it:
- files that arrive during a run collect at the bottom, under 12 new, in the order they arrive;
- a file you open stops being unseen but stays in the Unseen list, and a refresh button appears beside the count - 1 file no longer matches the filter - refresh;
- changing the sort or a filter lays the list out again.
When you come back to a project, the list returns to the file you selected last.
The viewer
Double-click a picture, a video, a sound file, a PDF or a text file - or select it and press Enter - to open it in the viewer, over the whole window.
- ← and → move between files; at the last file the viewer stops rather than starting over. Files that arrive while it is open are added at the end.
- The toolbar holds the counter, the favourite star, zoom, slideshow, full screen, the strip of thumbnails and the close button. It fades after three seconds of stillness and comes back when you move the mouse.
- Over the bottom of the picture are the file's name, its resolution and its description, if it has one; click a long description to read all of it.
- A text file shows its first 256 KB. Web pages and SVG images are not shown as text.
- Opening a file marks it as seen.
Files the viewer cannot show - archives, programs, most documents - open with Open in the default program from the menu described below.
What you can do with a file
Right-click a file, or press and hold it on a touch screen, for its menu. With several files selected, the menu offers Delete for all of them; everything else works on one file.
- Open opens the file in the viewer.
- Open in the default program opens it in the program Windows uses for that kind of file. A file that is itself a program is not started: its folder is opened instead.
- Open on the site opens the page where the file was found, or the file's own address.
- Set as project cover puts this picture or video on the project's card.
- Rename and Properties open the same window - Rename with the cursor already in the name.
- Delete is described below.
The File properties window shows the Name, which you can change there - Enter or Rename saves it - and the file's path, size and state, its address and the page it was found on - the path and both addresses with buttons to copy them - and when it was first seen, changed and looked at. When they are known, it also shows the group, the resolution, the length, the publication date and the description. If a name cannot be used, the window says why.
Under What the site says is what the site published about the file; Show all … opens the rest of the list.
Delete files
Delete removes the files from the disk for good, and this project will not download them again. From five files up, NeoDownloader asks first: They go from the disk for good, and this project will not download them again.
If some files could not be deleted - another program may have them open - NeoDownloader says Not everything went and how many are left.
Deleting files is not deleting the project; for that, see Delete a project.
Project description
A project can have a description above its files. Some sites provide one, and you can write your own: click Add description at the end of the toolbar. A long description shows its first two lines; Show more opens the rest.
Point at the description for Edit description. If you have replaced the site's text with your own, Remove and let the site fill it again hands the description back to the site.
Files that are not on disk
A file deleted or moved outside NeoDownloader, or one whose drive is not connected, shows Not on disk on its tile, and its thumbnail is dimmed. Opening it shows This file is no longer on disk. It was deleted or moved outside the program, or its drive is not connected.
The viewer skips such files, and the menu cannot open, rename or use them as a cover. Delete still removes one from the project. To have the file back, return it to where it was or connect its drive.
